Basically a endgame can be won if there are at least two pieces on the board besides N + N or B + N or all light or dark squared bishops with the no trapped pawn. Or the game is won if there is two trapped pawns and a piece, As long as that piece is able to capture one of the pawns it is a win e.g If I have a dark squared bishop and both of my opponents pawns are on light squares I can't win. But If I had a light squared bishop I could easily win by using my light squared bishop to capture one of his light squared pawns and then promoting my free pawn into a queen and winning the game (To see how to win that position click here).
