Knowledge

The difference between the 21st century AD and the 21st century BC is of two things. One of them is the time and the other which you must have already guessed, is of knowledge. Knowledge has played a major role in the acheivement that we humans have had over the years. It has helped us to understand our world in such a way that now for us living a life is much more easier. Life is no more boring. We can do lots of things today, which were impossible even to perceive few centuries back.

Sure, there is a chance that people living back in the twenty first century BC might have had the fantasy of flying carpets and killing the inlaws without being caught. We have yet, to creat a carpet that flies and a way to be able to live freely after killing our inlaws. But those people could have never thought of hundreds of people flying together in a long tunnel of iron or creating a law and lawyers who give the people the right to call police if the inlaws are injust with them. These and many other things are possible just because we have more knowledge. Infact more of an accurate knowledge.

We use things like cars, airconditions, computers and CDs. All these things were possible because their inventors had the right knowledge. How did they get the knowledge. Did they dig it out from somewhere? Or did they created it? Neither. They were taught. Taught by those who were themselves taught by their elders. But who created this knowledge in the first place. Is it you? or me? or was it Einstien? It was our God. It created knowledge that now we use to make our liives easier.

The Source of all knowledge

Quran: Surah 43 and ayah 84,

It is It Who is Allah in heaven and Allah on earth;
and It is full of Wisdom and Knowledge.

From this ayah of the Holy Quran it is clear that God is the source of all knowledge that has reached humans at different times. Other then this ayah there is more proof to show that knowledge is from our Creator and not from our ancestors.

The act of seeking knowledge to use it and then passing it to the next generation is something that comes in life when one is mature enough to understand this knowledge. But even before this, man learned to sit, then crawl and then walk. Who thaught him to do that. Did his parent do that? No. Then who. It was God who taught man how to walk on the face of this earth. If man would have been unable to walk could he knew what he knows now?

The first man to be able to walk on this earth was Adam(pbuh).

Surah 15 and ayah 28,

Behold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man from sounding clay from mud molded into shape;

God was there to teach him(pbuh) everything. Then Adam(pbuh) passed his(pbuh) knowledge to his(pbuh) children and they did the same for their children and so it went on till the knowledge, that kept increasing from generations to generations reached us.

Every thing that is present in this universe was created by our God, for us.

Surah 16 and ayah 8,

And (It has created) horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and use for show; and It has created (other) things of what ye have no knowledge.

It is clear in this ayah that kowledge is not some thing that we human create or own. Its what we get with all the things that the Creator created. Its more of a discovery by man rather than a creation.

If water would have not been created, could we have gained all the knowledge related to water itself, ships, ice, rain, clouds and the marine life? Water, air, fire and sand are the source of life, without them, would it have been possible for anything to survive? If Allah had not given us the knowledge through the things that It created, could we have ever believed in the phrase, 'Knowledge is Power'.

Is Knowledge really power

Surah 3 and ayah 26,

Say: "O Allah! Lord of Power (and Rule) thou givest Power to whom Thou pleasest and Thou strippest off power from whom Thou pleasest thou enduest with honor whom thou pleasest and thou bringest low whom Thou pleasest; in Thy hand is all Good. Verily over all things thou hast power.

Well in one of the above mentioned ayahs(surah 43 and ayah 84) it is clearly said that God is full of knowledge. Here it is said that 'O Allah! Lord of Power'.

Surah 13 and ayah 9,

It knoweth the Unseen and that which is open: He is the Great the Most High.

This ayah proves that knowledge is power. The one who has the most knowledge, is the Greatest and the Higest. Who could be the Greatest and the Higest except Allah, no one. Because no one has as much knowledge as Allah. In our world a man may not be as powerfull as Allah but he surely can have power on certain things if he gains the right knowledge and then uses it at the right time.

Seeking of knowledge

We all have heard the famous hadith regarding seeking knowledge which clearly orders humans to seek knowledge and learn, even if we have to go to China(here Hazarat Muhammad(pbuh) said China may be because since it was very hard to reach China at that time from Saudia Arabia).

Following are some sayings of the prophet Mohammad pbuh about seeking knowledge and the people who learn knowledge.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who issues forth in search of knowledge is busy in the cause of Allah till he returns from his quest.

Acquiring knowledge in company for an hour in the night is better than spending the whole night in prayer.

In quran we are ordered to travel around the world and learn the knowledge that the world contains.

Surah 29 and ayah 20,

Say (O Muhammad): Travel in the land and see how It originated creation, then Allah bringeth forth the later growth. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things.

How can we know how God 'originated creation'. We observe it and when we observe something we learn about it and when we learn something we gain knowledge. From this knowledge we gain even more knowledge. Allah ordered us to travel in the land and see how It started creating different things and when we get the knowledge of how God's creation started to appear in this world, it is only then that we can gain further knowledge of how that creation of God, will be grown by God, after it has been created.

Now why would the seeking of knowledge be that important?

In Surah 6, ayah 98 God says that;

We detail Our signs for people who understand.

and in surah 45, ayah 3 God says;

Verily in the heavens and the earth are Signs for those who believe.

From these two ayahs it is clear that God's signs(meaning the knowledge of how Allah created this universe and its interaction with man) could only be understood by those who are able to understand. The signs of Allah are for those who want to learn not just being taught by some one else but also want to see it through their own eyes and then want to observe it through their own minds and then want to feel it with there own hearts and its only then that they would decide what is true and what is not. The signs are for those who have already traveled the land to gain the UNDERSTANDING of the knowledge of this world.

The character of Morpheus said in the movie 'The Matrix', ... there's a difference between knowing the path ... and walking the path... We might have created large and well equiped universities that give degrees to millions of students every year and try to make them a professional but we have forgotten one basic fact of life. Its not the degree or the years spent in books but infact its the experience that makes us professionals and not just degree holders. Experience should be given more importance in our educational institutions than theories.

Should knowledge be free

Following are some excerpts from an article that I read in a newspaper.

If you have been a victim of some injustice and if you are not selfish or money driven you will prefer the freedom of knowledge for this little girl regardless of what she believed in.

It tells the story of a girl who killed herself because she could not gain knowledge.

She may not have dreamed of becoming a legend. She may not have wanted to earn a huge amount of money. But the shortage of basic needs to live did not allow her to read and write and grow as an enlightened human being. Foreseeing her ambition going down the drain, she bid farewell to her own life.

The 18-years-old Nadia Baloch of Larkana passed away on Aug 24 when doctors failed to save her life struggling for a week after she gulped down poison when her father asked her to discontinue studies. The reasons her father had dished out for not allowing her to complete her education was that the expenses had become unbearable for an aging father who was serving as a peon at some office in Karachi and had to feed a family of eight children.

Nadia had passed her matriculation securing more than 70 per cent marks and was a student of first year at the Larkana College. Like her elder sister, she too wanted to continue her studies. But her parents knew that additional expenses would be difficult to make her fulfil her desire. Seeing no way out, she thought of putting an end to her life.

If this is not enough for us muslims to make knowledge available for free, then read the following saying of prophet Mohammad pbuh.

If a scholar(Alim) charges money for the knowledge that he gives, on the day of judgement an adulterer will enter heaven before him.

May God save us all.
